Some simple steps can ensure that you are in the best possible shape to
undergo your procedure – and that you get the optimal result from it

We all know that NHS waiting times are longer than ever. Figures as high as 7.3 million have been
suggested for the total number of patients awaiting treatment, with orthopaedic procedures among
those with the longest queues.

It is certainly frustrating when you are waiting for, say, a hip or knee replacement, but there are
things you can do to help you to be in the best shape for the surgery – when it does come – and to
get the best result from it afterwards.

Your new hip or knee may be magic (!) but that does not mean that the muscles and tendons around
it will magically be so too! If you can keep the tissue around your hip or knee in good condition
leading up to the operation, that is going to significantly enhance – and probably accelerate – your
mobility, strength and fitness post-op.

And that is where we can help.

A case could be made for many of our services being of advantage to you in this regard. Pilates and
Body Conditioning are obviously going to improve your muscle tone and strength, meaning that your
(strong) new knee or hip will have equally healthy muscles to work alongside.

(You don’t want to neglect those muscles, while you are waiting for your surgery, and have them be
“the weakest link” in your mobility chain.)

The wonderful AlterG anti-gravity treadmill is a great way to keep your leg muscles in trim before
and after the operation. Beforehand, gentle walking or jogging will optimise your leg muscle tone;
afterwards, the AlterG is a completely safe way to reintroduce your body to movement – with as
much or as little weight-bearing as is appropriate.

Our intervention does not have to consist of a lot or cost a lot. An exploratory appointment could
assess your condition, pre- or post-op, and recommend a simple set of exercises that you can use at
home to prepare yourself for surgery or recovery best from it.

If you are on a waiting list – or if you have just had an operation – and you want to make sure you
get the best possible performance from your shiny new hip or knee, please consider contacting us
for an appointment or just some friendly advice.
