AlterG: evidence for mobility and gait enhancement in Parkinson’s Disease patients

Scientific evidence from the USA and Mexico points to statistically significant benefits through the use of an anti-gravity treadmill

People with Parkinson’s Disease experience symptoms that can include an increasingly stilted gait,
decreased mobility, and naturally, along with these, a huge reduction in their confidence in moving
around.

The latest research holds out new hope for them.

Scientists in the USA and Mexico studied Parkinson’s Disease patients with moderate to severe
freezing of gait. The scientists asked the patients to undergo anti-gravity treadmill training twice a
week for four consecutive weeks.

At the end of that period, patients recorded an average improvement of seven seconds in the “timed
up and go” test (which involves the patient standing up from a chair, walking to a line three metres
away, turning, walking back to the chair and sitting back down.) In addition, 84% reported moderate
to significant improvement in gait.

The scientists were able to conclude that anti-gravity treadmill training improved the freezing of gait
and mobility in patients with Parkinson’s Disease.

You may have seen our AlterG anti-gravity treadmill in the corner of the room where we hold our
classes.

Because the machine supports you, whilst reducing the amount of gravity acting upon you (and thus
the force with which your body lands), it is completely a safe means by which to try and move a little
more.

We have seen amazing results already with the AlterG – and it is the sort of thing that you will not
completely appreciate until you have experienced it for yourself.

Using the AlterG, one gentleman was able to progress from being wheelchair-bound to using a
walking stick. Another thought they would never jog again, but a few sessions got them running –
and crying! – with joy.

In an AlterG session, you will always be supervised at first – and this option is always available to
you. We have AlterG packages available, should you then wish to book regular sessions.
We would urge anyone with Parkinson’s Disease – or any condition that impairs your gait or
mobility – to please give the AlterG a try. It is a completely safe and amazingly beneficial path
back to a life of far greater freedom and enjoyment
