Male Pelvic Health
Many men live with pelvic health problems for years — quietly managing symptoms, feeling embarrassed to bring them up, or simply assuming nothing can be done. The truth is, these conditions are common, they are treatable, and specialist physiotherapy can make a profound difference to your quality of life.
At Grosvenor Clinic, our specialist physiotherapists are here to help — with expertise, discretion, and a genuine commitment to getting you back to feeling like yourself.
Did You Know?
Pelvic health problems in men are far more widespread than many people realise:
- Around 1 in 10 men will experience bladder problems at some point in their lives.
- 50% of men over the age of 60 will be affected by prostate-related issues.
- Every man has a pelvic floor — and just like any other muscle group, it can be treated and rehabilitated.
Despite this, many men go years without support, often assuming their symptoms are simply something to be endured. They don’t have to be.
Conditions We Treat
Our male pelvic health service is designed for men experiencing any of the following:
Pelvic Pain
Pain in the groin, buttocks, or genitals can be distressing and difficult to talk about. Whether your symptoms are constant or come and go, our specialists will work to understand the root cause and create a treatment plan tailored to you.
Bladder Urgency & Frequency
Feeling a sudden, urgent need to urinate — or needing to go far more often than feels normal — can disrupt your day and disturb your sleep. These symptoms are very treatable with the right physiotherapy approach.
Bladder Incontinence
Leaking urine, whether during activity or with little warning, is far more common in men than many realise. It can affect your confidence, your work, and the things you enjoy doing. Specialist pelvic floor physiotherapy has a strong evidence base for helping men regain control.
Constipation & Bowel Incontinence
Difficulties with bowel function — including chronic constipation or loss of bowel control — can have a significant impact on daily life. Our physiotherapists take a sensitive, non-judgemental approach to help you address these symptoms with confidence.
Post-Prostatectomy Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation
Urinary incontinence and pelvic floor weakness are common following prostate surgery. Pelvic floor rehabilitation is one of the most effective ways to speed up recovery, reduce leakage, and restore confidence after a prostatectomy. We work closely with men at every stage of recovery — whether you’ve recently had surgery or are still dealing with symptoms further down the line.
What to Expect
We know that seeking help for pelvic health concerns takes courage. At Grosvenor Clinic, your comfort and dignity are our priority from the moment you get in touch.
Your initial appointment will begin with a thorough conversation about your symptoms, your health history, and what you’d like to achieve. Any physical assessment will be fully explained beforehand, carried out with your consent, and conducted with care and sensitivity throughout.
From there, we’ll develop a personalised treatment plan — which may include pelvic floor muscle training, manual therapy, bladder or bowel retraining, lifestyle guidance, and education — to give you the best possible outcome.
You’re in Good Hands
Our physiotherapists have specialist training in male pelvic health and are experienced in supporting men through conditions that can feel isolating or difficult to discuss. There is no judgement here — only expert care.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do men even have a pelvic floor?
Yes — absolutely. This is one of the most common misconceptions we come across. Every man has a pelvic floor. It’s a group of muscles that sits at the base of the pelvis, supporting the bladder, bowel, and sexual function. Just like any other muscle group in the body, the pelvic floor can become too weak, too tight, or not function as it should — and just like any other muscle group, it responds well to the right rehabilitation.
How common are male pelvic health problems?
More common than most men realise — and far more common than the number of men who seek help for them. Around 1 in 10 men will experience bladder problems at some point in their lives, and research suggests that 50% of men over the age of 60 will be affected by prostate-related issues. Despite this, many men go years without support, often assuming their symptoms are simply something to be endured. They don’t have to be.
What happens at my first appointment?
Your first appointment at Grosvenor Clinic is primarily about getting to know you and understanding your symptoms thoroughly. Nothing will happen without your full understanding and consent, and you are in control throughout.
Taking Your History
We’ll begin with a detailed conversation covering your symptoms in full — when they started, what makes them better or worse, and how they’re affecting your daily life. We’ll also ask about your general health, any previous surgeries or investigations, your bladder and bowel habits, your sleep, your activity levels, and any medications you’re currently taking.
This conversation is private, confidential, and completely free of judgement. Speaking openly with us really does help us help you, so we’ll always encourage you to share as much as you feel comfortable with.
Physical Assessment
Depending on your symptoms, your physiotherapist will carry out a physical assessment. This is a routine and important part of understanding how your body is moving and functioning as a whole. This may include assessment of your:
- Posture — how you hold yourself at rest and during movement
- Lumbar spine — the mobility and function of your lower back
- Hips — range of movement, strength, and any areas of restriction
- Gluteal muscles — the strength and coordination of your buttock muscles
- Abdomen and pelvis — how your core and pelvic region work together
This whole-body assessment matters because pelvic health rarely exists in isolation — tight hips, a stiff lower back, or weak gluteal muscles can all contribute to pelvic floor dysfunction.
Pelvic Floor Examination
To fully understand how your pelvic floor is functioning, your physiotherapist may recommend an internal examination. We appreciate this can feel daunting, and we will always talk you through exactly what is involved before proceeding. You can ask questions, take your time, and decline any part of the assessment — your comfort and consent come first.
A pelvic floor examination may include one or both of the following:
Superficial genital examination — a visual and external assessment of the perineal region to look for any areas of tension, sensitivity, or changes in tissue that may be relevant to your symptoms.
Digital rectal examination (DRE) — a gentle internal examination carried out by a gloved, lubricated finger to assess the tone, strength, and coordination of the pelvic floor muscles, as well as identifying any areas of tenderness or tightness. This examination is the most accurate way for us to understand how your pelvic floor is functioning and to determine the right treatment plan for you.
Not everyone will need an internal examination, and your physiotherapist will always discuss whether it is appropriate and necessary for your individual situation before anything is agreed.
Will I need an internal examination at every appointment?
No. Internal assessment is typically used in the early stages to get a clear picture of how your pelvic floor is working. Subsequent appointments focus much more on your exercise programme, manual therapy, and monitoring your progress.
Do I need a GP referral to be seen?
No — you can self-refer directly to Grosvenor Clinic. Simply book online, call us, or send an enquiry and our team will be in touch to arrange your appointment.
How many appointments will I need?
This varies from person to person depending on your symptoms and goals. Many men notice meaningful improvement within a handful of sessions, while others benefit from a longer course of treatment. After your initial assessment, your physiotherapist will give you a clearer idea of what to expect and how often they’d recommend being seen.

Thanks for the session and the resulting exercises.Posted on Google keith DavisTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had been having quite bad balance and coordination issues caused through MS and started one to one pilates with Karen this has helped enormously and after 3 sessions I joined the restorative pilates classes on Tuesday as well continuing with my one to one sessions as well. The pilates is helping me enormously to restore my muscle tone and provide me with the ability to readjust my balance when I have a wobble. The classes are very friendly and well instructed and there is a great feeling of camaraderie as everyone in this specific class has physical issues of some kind I want to keep the MS tucked away in the background as long as I possibly can and feel I am achieving this and I’m far more in control of my body than it isPosted on Google Amanda WigginsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Gave me an urgent slot for a knee injury I feared might significantly restrict my participation in a weekend in Paris. Fantastic service from Alex from start to finish. Listened, understood, examined thoroughly, explained and then reassured that, although injured, joint stable and no harm would be done using it sensibly. Affirmed that the brace I'd bought was fine and then applied K tape for added support. Alex is pragmatic, professional, friendly and honest. Huge relief. Highly recommended.Posted on Google Jo WTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Managed a same day appointment for a shoulder injury.
