Pessary Fitting Service
Pessaries are silicon or PVC medical devices used in the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse.
We use silicon pessaries in our practice.
Some women choose to wear them all the time and others just as they need.
Pessaries come in lots of different shapes and sizes and what you will need will depend on your assessment and goals.
Pessaries are used alongside all the other pelvic health treatments, i.e bowel care advice, pelvic floor stretches or strengthening etc. Otherwise this may impact their benefit and fall down/out.
This is service is provided by our Pelvic Health Physiotherapist.
What Happens in a Pessary Appointment?
Your appointment will be up to 90min long. This will consist of a full comprehensive assessment of your symptoms and current management including any other medical conditions. Pessary indications and contraindications will be discussed.
- Physical examination of posture and movement patterns – squat, walking etc.
- Breathing and abdominal examination.
- Vaginal pelvic floor examination to assess pelvic floor strength, co-ordination, resting tone.
- Prolapse examination and measurements with a speculum in either lying on your back or on your side.
- Discussions on which pessary would be suitable and then fitting begins.
- You will then be asked to go for a walk for 10mins to see how it feels.
- A standing assessment will be completed to see if it is sitting well.

- If it is not quite right, we will then try a different size or type.
- You will need to come back to clinic in 2 weeks for a review and then further follow ups at 3,6,12 months and then as agreed between you and the clinician.
- Reviews will be 30min appointments to trouble shoot any issues you maybe having and to complete a speculum tissue check.
- If a pessary trial is unsuccessful in improving your symptoms, you will still be liable for the appointment cost.
Good to Know
- The cost of the pessary is not included in the appointment fee and are £50.
- Pessary fittings are not covered by insurance companies.
- Should you have already had an assessment by a pelvic health physio or gynaecologist and are able to provide a letter of assessment details and recommendation then you may be able to attend for the 60mins fitting only.
