Is it really a rotator cuff injury?
Whether it is or not, it is important to treat the problem, not the diagnosis “It’s a rotator cuff injury” is sometimes a diagnosis that is expressed in the absence of real proof, blaming the rotator cuff for what could be almost any shoulder, neck or even spinal issue. The most common symptoms are pain at rest, especially at night when lying on the affected shoulder.
You may also notice pain when raising, lowering or rotating the arm.
Whether your problem is indeed a true rotator cuff tear, in our opinion it is important to treat the
problem, as you experience it, and not the diagnosis.
That is why we will always go back to the source of your problem: was it a sudden onset issue,
brought on by some errant sporting or other physical impact, or has it been something that has
gradually encroached upon your wellbeing over time?
Again, rather than treat the diagnosis, we will identify your individual problems and thus your
personal needs. What matters is that you can’t sleep, or that a particular area of your body is giving
you difficulties. What in your body is tight, weak or sore?
Based on this analysis, we will recommend a programme of rehabilitation, physiotherapy, exercise,
massage or other intervention, to relieve whatever is troubling you as soon as possible.
Therefore, if you have a pain of any sort around the shoulder, neck or spinal area, please don’t
worry if it is a rotator cuff injury or not; please do not hesitate to come and see us so that we can
look at your individual symptoms and recommend your personal treatment plan.
