What is the difference between a Podiatrist and a Chiropodist?

In the UK the name Chiropody was changed to Podiatry in 1993, as this is the internationally recognised name for a foot specialist. In addition to all the more obvious treatments for corns and hard skin etc, Podiatrists treat a vast array of foot and lower limb problems. A Podiatrist will assess the biomechanics of the leg and foot (i.e. how they move and function), and how this is related to a range of painful conditions which can affect the foot, ankle, lower limb, knee, hip and lower back.

A podiatrist will carry out a Biomechanical Assessment to assess musculoskeletal alignment and the motion of the foot and lower limb during walking. This will reveal abnormalities which could cause injuries or pain and/or the development of deformities. The podiatrist can then solve many of these problems with advice about footwear, specific exercises and through the issue of specialised insoles called Orthotics.
